The OnePlus 5 Arrives This Summer

OnePlus, the Chinese phone company that’s doing really well for itself, has announced a rough timeframe for the release of the OnePlus 5. The successor to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T will be arriving sometime this summer.

“But, Tom!” I hear you cry. “How can you skip from three straight to five? Have they forgotten four exists?”

They have not, and there’s an actual reason for it. Unlike that time Sony skipped the Xperia Z4, because that’s what it called the Z3+ in Japan.

It’s because OnePlus is a Chinese company, and a common Chinese superstition is that the number four is unlucky. Four (pronounced sì) sounds similar to the word for death (sÄwĂ¡ng). It would be like Apple skipping the iPhone 13 because some people western cultures tend to have panic attacks whenever it pops up.

The OnePlus 5 is also the fifth handset, provided you ignore the underpoweredOnePlus X, so the numbering system isn’t that crazy.

Right now that’s basically all we know about the OnePlus 5. Rumours indicate that it will be a flagship-tier phone with a dual camera, which just sounds like business as usual. [Ubergizmo]
