A Psychologist Analyzed the Relationships of 12 Cartoon Couples and Now We Know If They Will Actually Live Happily Ever After
Almost every single cartoon or fairytale ends with the characters living happily ever after. However, if you watch some of your favorite cartoons from your childhood as an adult, the relationship between the characters doesn’t seem as happy anymore. If you look at them objectively, you will see that not all of these relationships will last forever and some might’ve stopped after a couple of years.
My name is Valeriya, and I’m a psychologist. Especially for Bright Side, I decided to analyze the relationships of famous couples from our favorite animated movies. In this article, I’ve looked at things in these characters’ relationships and predicted whether they would’ve remained together or not after their movie was over.
Anna and Kristoff, Frozen
Female character: She is the princess of a kingdom. She is full of life, funny, responsible, and always ready to help others. In the first part of the movie, she was naive, so she got herself into trouble with her family. Anna manages to overcome this trouble and learn from her mistakes. And even though her sister Elsa is dead (Frozen 2), this didn’t break her spirit. She is ready to do anything to help others.
Male character: He is a simple but kind guy and he really loves nature. He looks a little bit uncouth but, in reality, he is strong, honest, and loyal. He spent most of his life not communicating or interacting with other people and he is used to doing things on his own. He can also be a bit grumpy, lazy, and even selfish at times, but there is a good heart behind all of his flaws.
Together: Kristoff will be very reliable for Anna. He can’t help her with her government issues, but his emotional support and faith will help her when she needs it. And Anna can direct and inspire Kristoff.
Prediction: They will always be together.
Rapunzel and Eugene, Tangled Ever After
Female character: She’s a princess with magic powers that was kidnapped by an evil witch. Kind and cheerful, even though her entire life and her interaction with the outside world was really limited. And the only person she could communicate with was her foster mother. Rapunzel really is a fairy tale character. A regular person in this situation would most likely have social anxiety or would have Stockholm syndrome.
Male character: He’s a thief, a liar, and a charming guy. Eugene has an actual reason to be this way — he has a dream. And Rapunzel’s innocence and how naive she is, push this charming thief to achieving his dream. But in the end, Eugene listens to his heart and does the right thing.
Together: They’ve already proven that they will sacrifice a lot for each other. And even the fact that their dreams came true and that they will live a simple, happy life doesn’t mean that their marriage will be destroyed by routine. They will find a new dream and goal together and will work to achieve it.
Prediction: They will always be together.
Tiana and Naveen, The Princess and the Frog
Female character: She’s a girl that’s living with a dream. Nothing can destroy her passion. Tiana is ready to work tirelessly because she understands that she is doing all of this to improve her life and to achieve her goal.
Male character: He’s a prince and a lazy man. He doesn’t understand the value of life. And even though Tiana opens his eyes, I don’t think he really understands that not everything can be solved with power, money, or magic.
Together: They will most likely break up. Naveen will soon get tired of being next to a business woman. And Tiana is too goal-oriented and responsible to just go somewhere together for adventure. They are very different and when their feelings become weaker, they won’t be able to rely on each other.
Prediction: They will get divorced in a couple of years, by mutual consent.
Astrid and Hiccup, How to Train Your Dragon
Female character: She is a brave warrior who is smart, responsible, and very loyal to her cause. But she was still able to change her opinions when dragons became a part of their everyday lives. Astrid is the most loyal supporter of Hiccup. In fact, Hiccup’s mother even thinks that Astrid is the only person that can influence Hiccup.
Male character: He’s a child that was always looking for his father’s approval. But his father was never interested in his son’s dreams and inventions. Throughout the entire story, Hiccup tries to solve the problems in whatever way he can. His outside-the-box thinking is not understood or valued by everyone. But he is okay with this, it actually pushes him to take action and he is successful at being a tribesman.
Together: They discover the world of dragons and new dangers. Hiccup is a dreamer and he knows how to achieve his dreams. Astrid is a down-to-earth girl and her support and faith in her husband will help them overcome all of their challenges.
Prediction: They will always be together.
Cinderella and Prince Charming, Cinderella
Female character: She is hardworking and patient. She thinks that all of her troubles and difficulties will just go away on their own which is probably not the smartest thing. But this is a fairy tale, so thanks to magic and a few lucky breaks, everything works out quite well for Cinderella.
Male character: He’s spoiled and absent-minded. If it weren’t for the lost shoe, I have no idea how he would search for and identify Cinderella. But he still put in quite a lot of effort to find her. He is a typical prince: he wants everything right now.
Together: They are definitely a bad match. The prince is too impulsive, and he is more likely to ignore relationship problems rather than try to solve them. Cinderella is too shy to discuss everyday issues, so she will just keep on hoping things will get sorted out on their own.
Prediction: They will definitely have problems, but they will happen later in the relationship. Cinderella will shut herself down and nobody will help. And the prince will soon find a mistress or even divorce Cinderella.
Alva and Jesper, Klaus
Female character: In the beginning, she is quite unfriendly and grim, with only one dream — to leave this island as soon as possible. It’s because her dream — teaching children — got destroyed by the mentality of the locals. After she meets Jesper, Alva restores her faith in her cause and then she starts to enjoy her life again.
Male character: He’s spoiled, mercantile, and selfish. But as the story progresses, we can see that Jesper is capable of sympathy, he is quite smart, and he’s very adventurous. He is not afraid of showing his true emotions. Of course, in real life, this kind of transformation is not very likely.
Together: They change each other for the best. This is a rare situation where 2 lost people found each other and loved each other for no reason.
Prediction: They will always be together.
Ariel and Eric, The Little Mermaid
Female character: She’s honest, naive, not used to thinking about what her actions might lead to. She is also very impulsive: she liked the prince, so she has to get him, and she doesn’t care about what happens to her father, her subjects, and herself on land, which she doesn’t know anything about. In real life, this character wouldn’t live long.
Male character: He loves adventures, he’s not very smart, and he doesn’t feel responsible for his kingdom. He heard this voice of a mysterious girl that saved him and he is ready to marry her right away.
Together: They are both dreamers and they can’t deal with their own problems. Eric will go on a trip and Ariel will follow him. But we can’t be sure that their relationship will last long.
Prediction: There are 2 options. Either they will live happily ever after forever, because neither of them is very clever, or they will break up soon because they don’t know much about each other. And Eric will most likely get tired of Ariel.
Belle and the Prince, Beauty and the Beast
Female character: Belle’s father is an inventor who is not very successful, but he really loves his daughter. As for Belle, even though she is well-educated, she can’t find any friends, and she prefers books instead of direct communication. She was really bothered by the attention of the most popular guy in their village and was ready to do anything for her father.
Male character: He is ill-tempered, very straightforward, and impulsive. He didn’t know what compassion was and he judged people by their appearances, which is why he was turned into a monster. In order to lift his curse, he had to find a girl that would love his personality, not his appearance. He wasn’t going to change his life until he met Belle.
Together: They are only bound by the curse. It seems that Belle was more impressed by the library of the prince, rather than how much he tried to become human for her. The prince will continue to love her, but Belle might soon get very bored and she will look for the adventures that she had always been dreaming about.
Prediction: There are 2 possible options. Either the Prince will follow his love everywhere and they will live their entire life together or Belle will realize that she wants adventures more than love and will soon leave the Prince.
Shrek and Fiona, Shrek
Female character: She’s a princess waiting for a prince or a knight, in a tower, dreaming about love. She doesn’t know much about the real world. And she has a curse that turns her into an ogre when the night falls. She is very active and strong, but she has low self-esteem because of her appearance. It’s only thanks to another ogre that she realizes that appearance is not everything.
Male character: He is a bore and a lone wolf. He is also quite sensitive, hiding under a mask of “I don’t need anyone,” and he seems stubborn and selfish. He wasn’t interested in anything aside from his home and he wasn’t going to change anything in his life. He went to search for Fiona because he wanted his home back, but then he fell in love and realized that home wasn’t the most important thing in his life.
Together: They are great for each other. Everyone finds the things in this relationship that they need and they accept themselves for who they are. They solve all their problems successfully, despite all the doubts they have.
Prediction: They will always be together.
Aladdin and Jasmine, Aladdin
Female character: She is a princess in a golden cage, she wants to live on her own, and she wants to make her own decisions. She is stubborn and she doesn’t want to do as she is told. It is partially her father’s fault: he was overprotective, which is never good. She only knows what it’s like to live in the palace and her father doesn’t even notice the problems created by Jafar. But she takes control of her life and changes her life for the best.
Male character: He’s a thief because he has to be. He grew up on the streets and had to fight for survival. Aladdin didn’t lose his sense of kindness, which was good for him in the long run. He’s not very confident, which is why he can’t believe that a girl like Jasmin could like him since he doesn’t have anything to offer her.
Together: They are great for each other. Aladdin will guide Jasmin into another life that she has never seen before and Jasmin will remind him that there are better things in life than money.
Prediction: They will always be together.
Hercules and Megara, Hercules
Female character: She was betrayed by someone she loved who sold her soul to Hades. Because of this she became disappointed in men and pessimistic about the world. She’s smart and the only thing she wants is freedom. When she met Hercules, she realized that not all men are the same.
Male character: He’s a child who wants to return to Olympus in any way he can. Just like many men, he is proud of his deeds and his power. But Hercules is still somewhat childish. But when his beloved was in danger, he matured. He was ready to sacrifice himself and his chance for an endless life.
Together: Considering the fact that both of them wanted to sacrifice their lives for each other, they are definitely in love.
Prediction: They will always be together.
Howl and Sophie, Howl’s Moving Castle
Female character: She’s a workaholic and a clueless girl-next-door. She’s not confident, she doesn’t think she is attractive, but she is pragmatic in a good way. Her kindness and realistic worldview help her deal with all of life’s difficulties, even a witch’s curse.
Male character: He’s a lonely and powerful wizard who sold his soul to a demon when he was a child. But despite all this, he is charming and attentive to other people. He also takes very good care of his appearance and he is stubborn, arrogant, and vain. He is a coward and he is afraid of taking responsibility.
Together: Howl helps Sophie see her own beauty. He gives her love and care. And she inspires him to be brave, to not be afraid of taking responsibility, and she literally saves his soul.
Prediction: They will always be together.
Do you agree with my predictions? Which of these couples do you think will live happily ever after and which ones will split up after some time?
