US President Donald Trump has nominated Brett Kavanaug to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court.
Kavanaug’s nomination comes after Kennedy announced his retirement last month.
“It is my honour and privilege to announce that I will nominate Brett Kavanaug to the US Supreme Court,” Trump said late on Monday from the White House.
In the lead up to the nomination, some conservatives had expressed concerns about 53-year-old Kavanaugh – a longtime judge and former clerk for Kennedy – questioning his commitment to social issues like abortion and noting his time serving under President George W Bush as evidence he is a more establishment choice. But his supporters cited his experience and wide range of legal opinions.
He recently voiced disagreement with a court decision allowing an undocumented teenage immigrant to get an abortion.
