Our hair, like every part of our body, needs special care and attention. Having thin and damaged hair can reveal a lot about our health, from medical conditions to poor dietary habits. There are several ways to add volume and, more importantly, to help our hair grow healthy and fabulous.

Bright Side selected the most effective ways to achieve thicker hair with Hollywood style volume.

1. Mix gelatin with essential oil to turn up the volume.

One thing we might’ve missed about gelatin is that it is a super-rich source of protein. It provides almost 2 grams of protein per ½ cup, which is a lot. Thus, it’s the best ingredient for a hair mask to thicken and strengthen thin and damaged hair. Blend water, unflavored gelatin, and a few drops of essential oil, then apply the mixture on your hair and massage. Wait a few minutes and rinse with cool water.

2. Create your own hair mask with eggs and Greek yogurt.

Eggs are rich in protein, biotin, and vitamin B12 which are all essential to strengthen thin and oily hair. The idea of washing your hair with egg might sound unpleasant at first, but the benefits of its compounds will amaze you even after the first use. Take some eggs and mix them with Greek yogurt, apply the mixture to your hair, and leave it on for an hour or so. You can then wash your hair, dry it with a microfiber towel, and enjoy the results.

3. Sleep with your hair in a bun.

One of the easiest ways to give volume to your hair can take action while you are asleep. Wash your hair just before going to bed and use a scrunchie to pull your wet hair up into a high bun. This way, your hair will dry overnight and when get up the next morning, you’ll notice double the volume and waves. You can also try 2 buns for a curlier look. One thing to remember is that curls always give a natural twist and texture to your hair.

4. Massage your scalp with a lightweight oil before washing.

A study showed that massaging your scalp can help hair growth and thicken your hair. Massage helps blood circulation. Try gently massaging your scalp in a circular motion before you shampoo. Use a hair treatment oil or a few drops of coconut oil, which are extremely beneficial for frizzy and damaged hair.

5. Include more veggies, fruits, and protein in your diet.

Having thin hair doesn’t just affect the volume of your hair, but also its breakage. If you want strong and healthy hair, you should definitely include greens and fruits in your diet. Our hair needs iron, biotin, and vitamins to grow healthy. Many vegetables, including spinach and beans, are high in iron and, of course, fruits are great sources of vitamins too.

Also, bananas, peanuts, and cauliflower contain biotin. For thick hair, protein is also necessary. Whole grains and soybeans are great sources of protein.

6. Visit your doctor for a check-up.

Even though it’s not very common, there is a possibility that a medical condition could be behind thin hair and hair loss. The most common related situations are thyroid malfunctions, vitamin or iron deficiency, anemia, and hormone problems. There is also a condition called androgenic alopecia, which is genetic and can begin in your twenties or after menopause. So getting a check-up is always a good place to start.

7. Lower the heat and try old school granny rollers.

Heat is not a friend of strong and thick hair, because it can lead to extensive breakage. After you’re done washing your hair, try to dry it gently with a towel, and then use a blow-dryer on low heat. Instead of using a curling iron, put a set of hot rollers in your hair. Separate your hair in sections, roll each one, wait 20 minutes to half an hour, and then un-roll. You can add some hairspray before rolling to make the volume last.

8. Use an avocado and egg hair mask once a week.

You don’t need chemical products for Hollywood-level volume. Natural ingredients can do the work too. Mix avocado, which is high in protein, and eggs, for shine and thickness, with olive or argan oil, and a tablespoon of honey to create a super nutritious mask for your hair. You can apply the mask on dry or wet hair, wait 20 minutes, and wash it off. Use regularly and you’ll quickly notice a difference.

9. Try hair color spray to add volume.

Adding hair color with a spray to your hair is like using makeup on your face. If put it on the right places you can completely change the style and appearance of your hair to look stronger and fuller. For darker hair, try to focus on the hair roots, where the contrast is more obvious. With a help of a hairdresser, you can also create motion through mixing 2 or 3 colors at once.

Sometimes we forget that our hair also needs care and pampering. What are some of your habits for maintaining healthy hair? And what problems are you facing? Share your thoughts in the comments.
